Ant Colonies: The Hidden Powerhouses Beneath Our Feet

1-Black ants

Name:  Lasius niger

Family:Formicidae

Order: Hymenoptera

Description:

black ant workers are, brown-black, small, wingless, in waists nipped, the adults, which have capacity to fly, are larger and browner

Ant infestations aren’t just an inconvenience, they can cause structural damage, contaminate food supplies, and create an unsanitary environment. They move quickly and, depending on the species, their colonies can grow into the thousands. Once ants find a reliable food source, they leave scent trails that guide other ants to the same spot, making it challenging to control their spread. While ants don’t always bite, certain species can cause irritation, stings, or even allergic reactions in humans.

2-Carpenter Ants

Name:  Camponotus spp

Family:Formicidae

Order: Hymenoptera

Description:

in the United States the carpenter’s ants are among largest ans, its length is almost about ½ in long, however size alone is not a good diagnostic tool, because workers of several sizes occur in single colony.

Carpenters ants are dark-colored bodies, narrow waists elbowed, antennae and hind wings that are shorter than front wings, workers are light- colored have broad waist and straight antennae

Fire ants are notorious for their painful sting, which feels like a burning sensation, hence their name. These ants are aggressive and will swarm when their nests are disturbed, making them a threat. Carpenter ants are large, typically black or red, and are more likely to be active during warmer months.

Unlike termites, they don’t eat wood but burrow through it to create nests. This tunneling can weaken wooden structures, including furniture, walls, and foundations.

Prevention & Treatment:

Seal cracks and openings around windows and doors.

Eliminate moisture sources that may attract carpenter ants.

Use ant baits or professional pest control to eliminate nests.

3-Fire Ants

Name: Solenopsis invicta,

Family:Formicidae

Order: Hymenoptera

Description:

Fire ant’s coloration, are red and black, like all insect, their hard exoskeleton protects them, workers head are rounded head and mandible, midsection of thorax are armored and abdomen made up of the pedicle and gaster.the head is typically copper brown in color

Fire ants are notorious for their painful sting, which feels like a burning sensation, hence their name. These ants are aggressive and will swarm when their nests are disturbed, making them a threat to both humans and animals. Their stings can cause swelling, itching, and in severe cases, allergic reactions that may require medical attention

Prevention & Treatment

Avoid outdoor areas where fire ant mounds are visible.

Use fire ant baits or mound treatments to target nests.

Seek medical care if severe allergic reactions occur after a sting

4 Sugar Ants

Name: Camponotus censorings’

Family:Formicidae

Order: Hymenoptera

Description:

Size of the sugar ants range from 2-25 mm in size, sugar ant’s male winged, with royal blood are completely black, orange -colored bodies have female workers

As their name suggests, sugar ants are attracted to anything sweet. They are one of the most common ants found in homes and businesses, where they

forage for sugary foods, including soda, syrup, and pastries. While sugar ants aren’t harmful to humans, they can contaminate food and spread bacteria.

Prevention & Treatment

Keep food stored in airtight containers.

Clean spills and crumbs immediately, especially sugary substances.

5-Odorous House Ants

Name: Tapinoma sessile

Family:Formicidae

Order: Hymenoptera

Description:

These ants get its name from the strong, rotten coconut-like smell it gives off when crushed. their color are browns, and these are tiny ants’ size from1-16 in to 1-8 in long, these are attracted to, moisture

These ants are small and dark-colored, and they release a foul odor when crushed, similar to the smell of rotten coconut. Odorous house ants tend to invade homes in search of food, especially sweets, and are typically found in kitchens and bathrooms.

Prevention & Treatment

Seal cracks in foundations, walls, and window frames.

Use bait stations to attract and kill the colony over time.

6-Pharaoh Ants

Name: Monomorium pharaonis)

Family:Formicidae

Order: Hymenoptera

Description:

Pharaoh ants are smallest ant almost size 1/12 or 1/16 of an inch. body color is reddish brown to slightly tan in nature, 20 facts in each compound eyes, four teeth in each mandible, paired longitudinal and metanota grooves are definitely distinct

Pharaoh ants are small, yellowish ants that can be particularly difficult to control because of their tendency to form multiple colonies in different locations. They are commonly found in hospitals, kitchens, and food processing areas, where they can spread pathogens like salmonella. Pharaoh ants can infest any area with accessible food, and their colonies can split when threatened, making eradication challenging

Prevention & Treatment

  • Store food properly and maintain cleanliness in kitchens and food storage areas.
  • Use slow-acting ant baits that allow the ants to carry the poison back to the nest.
  • Avoid spraying insecticides directly, as it can cause the colonies to scatter.

Life cycle:

Ants have complete metamorphosis, its means ants have 4 life stages, egg, larvae, pupa, adults, female lays both fertilized and unfertilized eggs
