Definition:
Insects use certain chemicals to communicate called Pheromones.
Discovered:
These chemical cues were first discovered almost 100 years ago by the French naturalist J.H. Fabre who captured female peacock moths in boxes and placed them near an open window, only to find male moths of the same species aggressively attracted to this window.
Types of Pheromones
Sex Pheromones:
Signals to attract for mates.
Alarm Pheromones:
Emitted in response to danger or threat.
Aggregation Pheromones:
Often used for communal activities like nesting or feeding.
Trail Pheromones:
Guide members of a colony or group to food sources or safe shelters.

Pheromones are detected by specialized receptors, such as antennae in insects or vomeronasal organs (VNO) in mammals.
Processing:
Signals are relayed to the brain, triggering specific behavioral or physiological responses.
