Name: Cadra cautella
Family: Pyralidae
Order: lepidoptera
The almond moth, or other name known as a tropical warehouse moth, is a small stored product pest. It has the snout moth family, it also attacks and damages dried fruit, flour, bran, oats, and other dried products. It also belongs to the, Indian meal moth, also confused with this species, and subterranean flour moth, these are called pantry pests in the same subfamily. Other common name of this moth are dried currant moth and fig moth, which make close confusion between, raisin moth and dried fruit moth.
Predominantly light brown in color of adult almond moths, their hind wings are smaller and are typically gray in color, 14 to 22 mm its wingspan when they are extended, and short fringes or lines appear on the back edges of wings. Larvae are mostly darker with gray heads. The caterpillars are almost 12–15 mm long and identifiable by the pattern of spots along its back.
Almond moth is found all over the world, in tropical climates it has spread to many regions around the globe, internationally, they infested the products due to its tendency of shipment, in Polynesia, with copra shipments, it has been transported.
Its habitat is some kind of dry food product, which is stored in warehouses or similar industrial environments, in dried fruit, they are commonly found, but they have also been found in nuts, beans, flour, and other grains.
Almond moth larvae also hatched onto a variety of dry foods and products, which they use as their primary food source, although several different kinds of dried fruit and other dried products are being infested by moths, the ideal food for larvae development is cracked and ground seed, then whole seed and grain. Larva also feed on eggs and other smaller larvae, so they called them cannibalistic. Adult almond moths don’t eat during their short life span; they even drink water if they have access to it.
Life cycle
In warm and humid environments, it thrives best .30-32-degree Celsius temperature range is ideal for almond moth development. 70=80% relative humidity is ideal, eggs hatch in half to three days if the condition is optimum, 17-37 days are required for the larval developmental period ranging from five instars; if temperature and humidity are optimal, then pupation takes place in 7 days, Adult almond moths, male and female, live an average of 6-7 days and 10 days respectively.
DAMAGE
Almond moth is commonly known as the pest of the various kinds of dried food products; it is not limited to, dried fruits, wheat products, flours, nuts, seeds, and infested grain and makes them unfit for human consumption, reducing the products market value.
The almond spread can be controlled, by using some pesticides, which reduce infestation, and thus exploration of natural enemies of the almond moth, including predators and parasites, which are basic means to control infestation.
There are some predators of the almond moth, Xylocoris flavipes, which is also called true because it feeds on the eggs and early larval stages of the almond moth, some mites, Blattiscocius tarsalis, also feed on the almond’s eggs throughout its life cycle, it will be considering the mechanisms of controlling infestation of almond moth.
Parasites of the almond moth also belong to the Hymenoptera, and several parasites of the genus Trichogramma, including. Evanescens, T. cacoeciae, Trichogramma are very small wasps; they will puncture the eggs of the almond moth, leave their own progeny inside eggs, Inside the egg, the actual larvae will be killed. Other kinds of wasps are produced from the eggs of the moth, which are called bracon hebetor, and Venturia canescens parasitize almond larvae in the later instar.
Several types of invertebrates, including the almond moth, which is infected by some bacteria, Wolbachia, it is transmitted from mother to offspring, as it resides in the ovaries of its host. The almond moth is not directly killed by these bacteria; the moths who are in their adult stages can reproduce and spread the bacteria further.
synthetic pyrethroid insecticide. Pyrid Aerosol is used as a flushing agent, to treat tight cracks and crevices where moths or other pantry pests may be hiding, in small spaces, almond moths tend to hide and lay their eggs, by applying these, we can control and kill them with contact.
